Narrative Theory in Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' "Where the Wild Roses Grow"

  1. An interesting music video with a menacing dreamlike quality. You have confidently referenced Straus' and Barthe's theory whilst identifying the use of montage. You have also included some excellent intertextual references, particularly your references to Shakespeare's Ophelia and Millais iconic painting which ironically ruined the health of his model Lizzie Siddal who was Rosetti's muse and later his wife.. Her story is as tragic as that of Ophelia.

Thus this reference to the painting is laden with connotations of the tragic muse.

Well organised and splendidly presented, note the passive representation of the female and the voyeuristic close ups of the mouth and lips (Goodwin), a convention of the representation of females in music videos.
